Because You're Worth It . . .

There's a new book on my bedside table, an early Mother's Day gift from that Hubby of mine.  Do you see it?  It's the one on the bottom of the stack.  A book by a little known author:  me.

After Christmas I wrote about a similar gift.  Now I've got two entire volumns full of my crazy ramblings on this little blog-about-nothing.

Look, here's one of my favorite posts from 2009.  In ink, on paper, recorded for generations to come.

If you have a blog, I highly encourage you to check out Blog2Print. The book printing can be a bit pricey, but consider having your blog downloaded into a PDF file which you can print yourself and put into a binder.

It's a great gift hint to give your hubby. Because hubbies can always use hints. And because you're worth it!

Mother's Day is just around the corner.  What are you doing for your mom?

Meet Jacob

Today I am blogging on my birthday present.  It’s a new computer.   He’s shiny and black.  And sleek and smooth.  And  he’s fast.  Big C suggested that my camera, Edward, needed a friend named Jacob.  I think it fits. What say you?

Thoughts On Gifting . . . (and a winner + a blog recommendation)

I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that I have a {un}healthy little obsession with giving gifts. I'm sure it has something to do with "The Pleaser" in me. That, and it just makes me feel so happy! I feel happy when I'm scouring the stores, my brain in gear thinking, my wallet itching to open {sorry Hubby} my heart totally into doing something for someone else. I feel happy when I'm packaging something up in a cute or clever way, imagining a reaction on the recieving end. And I feel really, really happy when a gift is opened and a genuine smile creeps across the face of the beneficiary who in that moment feels special, loved, and appreciated.

Lucky for me then that this is the year of the baby!  I have so many friends having babies I honestly can't count them all.  It's somewhere near twenty.  So when I'm out and about, I've got my baby gift eyes on.  Today three babies are getting gifts.  Two girls, one boy - maybe a future friend for Oliver?  Here they are, wrapped up, though simply, and ready to bring cheer to new mommies and warmth to new little ones.

Since I'm in the mood to give, here's a little gift for you, dear readers of this silly-little-blog-about-nothing: a link to another of my favorite blogs, Giver's Log.  AmberLee is a gift giving {and finding} genius.  I love to scour her posts for clever packaging ideas.  I love to scour her posts for original gift ideas.  I love to scour her posts for easy tutorials.  Heck, I think I'd scour her tub for an ounce of her creativity! Wait - I don't have to do that, because she's provided all out access to her creativity through this blog.  Two of my favorite posts are here and here. Go check it out!  But promise me that if you do, you'll then act on what you see by giving a gift to someone else {may I suggest donating to the RedCross to help our fellow humans in Haiti?}

And a last little gift to one lucky reader . . . Congratulations to EmilyatNotionsonNesting!
You are the winner of the January giveaway according to Random.org.  Your gift is on it's way and I know it's going to look fabulous in your fabulous home.  Come back in early February for a giveaway that is AWESOME.  It involves the Queen and will be key to your Valentine's happiness.

January Giveaway . . .

At the beginning of each year we try to choose a phrase or motto that we will focus on as a family.This is our new family motto for the year, posted in bold letters on the refrigerator where we will see it every day. We've challenged our children {and ourselves, of course!} to really think this year about WHAT MATTERS MOST. The inspiration for this motto comes from a talk given by Russell M. Ballard in 2005. A specific passage of this talk struck me as I was contemplating what I hoped to accomplish with and for my family this year {I've highlighted especially meaninful parts in green}:

"Now, one may ask, How do we protect and preserve and strengthen our homes and families in a world pulling so hard in opposite directions? Let me make three simple suggestions:

1. Be consistent in holding daily family prayer and weekly family home evenings. Both of these invite the Lord’s Spirit, which provides the help and power we need as parents and family leaders. The Church curriculum and magazines have many good ideas for family home evening. Also consider holding a family testimony meeting where parents and children can express their beliefs and feelings to each other in a private and personal setting.

2. Teach the gospel and basic values in your home. Establish a love for reading the scriptures together. Too many of our parents are abdicating this responsibility to the Church. While seminary, auxiliaries, and priesthood quorums are important as a supplement to parental gospel instruction, the main responsibility rests in the home. You might want to choose one gospel subject or a family value and then watch for opportunities to teach it. Be wise and do not involve children or yourselves in so many activities out of the home that you are so busy that the Spirit of the Lord cannot be recognized or felt in giving you the promised guidance for yourself and your family.

3. Create meaningful family bonds that give your children an identity stronger than what they can find with their peer group or at school or anyplace else. This can be done through family traditions for birthdays, for holidays, for dinnertime, and for Sundays. It can also be done through family policies and rules with natural and well-understood consequences. Have a simple family economy where children have specific chores or household duties and receive praise or other rewards commensurate to how well they do. Teach them the importance of avoiding debt and of earning, saving, and wisely spending money. Help them learn responsibility for their own temporal and spiritual self-reliance.

My turning to this talk was a result of recognizing a flaw in my own person - the ability I have to cast aside the truly important for meaningless and trivial things that fritter away my time.  I'm here today accounting for it and tell you that it is going to stop. I want to be a more attentive and involved mother and wife.  I want to spend more time building relationships - and especially those within the walls of my home - because they are what matters most and will last the longest.

If I asked myself what matters most, would I speak to my children in an angry way?  Would I tend to a child in need of some attention instead of checking facebook?  Would I put my book away in order to read a book a child wants to hear?  Would I say the hurtful words I sometimes say to my Hubby?  Would I put my interests and desires aside, even just for a moment, to help someone in need?

These are the things I'm wrestling with.  These are the things I want to change.  And we've committed to doing it as a family this year.

I'd love to hear what matters most to you, my blog readers.  And, if you're willing to leave a comment, you'll be entered to win my January giveaway, which is this beautifully distressed sign that says "Peace" and another like it but in mineral green that says "Hope".  I think these two words embody something we're all looking for in the new year.

So tell me, What Matters Most to you? {Giveaway closes Thursday at 5 pm EST.)

Big News (and another great blog recommendation) . . .

What better way to start the new year than with some BIG news and a little bit of change here on the blog?

First, the blog change:

One of my goals for the new year is to become even more familiar and proficient with my beloved camera Edward. He's proven loving and faithful in the past year and it's time for me to take our relationship to the next level. So yesterday I dragged out the manual that came with Edward and I've decided that I will plow through it page by page, deciphering unfamiliar terms and trying out new processes until I'm a photographer extraordinaire! {in reality, I see myself calling on my Photobro for much advice, help and untangling of a confused brain.}

In order to have accountability for this goal, I am turning to you, the readers of this silly-little-blog-about-nothing, for help. If you peek to the right of the blog you'll see a new dragonfly with a title of "Dragonfly Days". Click on the dragonfly and you'll be linked to my new photoblog, where I plan to post a photo a day from my tiny speck of a life for the next year. I wish I could take credit for this idea, but the inspiration for this year's photo chronicle comes from my friend Lee who is a talented, real, live professional photographer {and mom to three disconcertingly handsome boys}.

To those of you wondering why I'd take on the task of capturing 365 days when I couldn't even get 52 pictures of my family in 52 weeks - don't worry - I think this will be easier because I'm not required to corral all six of us for each photo. I hope you'll go over and check it out!

Now to the Big news! {and great blog recommendation . . .}

A few years ago a friend of mine from college guest blogged on a 'little' blog {as in HUGELY GIGANTIC} called Design Mom. What made the guest appearance unusual was that my friend was a HE blogging on a lifestyle blog for moms. I checked his writing out and was immediately hooked on Gabrielle Blair's practical, helpful and uber stylish blog for moms. Gabrielle is amazing in so many ways, but I most admire her ability to juggle all her life entails while still being a super fun and dedicated mom to her kids. I've borrowed many of her ideas for my own brood and they always prove to be downright fun.

A few months ago Gabrielle revealed that she was pregnant with her sixth child! Every Wednesday since then she has been posting really beautiful birth stories submitted by her readers. I have been mesmerized by the many and varied stories she's shared - from infertility, to adoption, to miscarriage, to multiples, to home births, she's covering the spectrum!

I decided a few weeks ago that I would submit the story of my mom, my sister and myself and today Gabrielle will be sharing it with the blog world. I cannot tell you how big a deal this is! I'm like the little kid who's been told they get to stay up late with the grown ups! I hope you'll stop by and leave a comment. I feel very honored, not just to be a part of Design Mom's Birth Story Collection, but also to share the very special story of three births with a larger audience.

You can check out one of my favorite posts from Design Mom here. Happy Wednesday to you all!
ps. Lots of links in this post! Don't forget to click on the blue words to be magically transported to some very happy places.

December Give Away . . .

Word on the street is that Oprah didn't do her "Favorite Things" episode this year. You know the one where she raves about all sorts of luxurious gifts and then gives every member of the lucky audience one of EVERYTHING right there on the spot! Something about handing out cashmere not being appropriate for these tough economic times?
When I heard this, I thought of you, my beloved audience, who sit at your computers day after day reading this silly little blog about nothing, listening to me drone on and on about the minutiae of my life, and felt it would be appropriate to do a "Dragonfly's Favorite Things" give away that is more in keeping with the economic climate. Of course, if I had my way, I would send this little package to each and every one of you. But I fear the Hubby would not approve.

So, here's the deal-e-o:

I've compiled a fun box of some of my favorite things from one of my favorite places - The Target! None of these things were expensive {take that Oprah!}, and yet each one is like a little ray of sunshine to me on a cloudy day. I want to share a bit of my joy with a Dragonfly reader just in time for Christmas. Hey, if you win you could even hand it over to your sweetheart and tell him to dump it directly into your stocking on Christmas Eve since each of these items is small in scale, yet large on impact.

To be eligible to win, you need only do the following:

1. Leave a comment on this post telling me about the best gift you ever got, who gave it to you and why it meant so much.

2. Leave a way for me to contact you in your comment (email, link to your blog, etc.).

3. Comment before 5:00 EST on Tuesday, December 15th (Big C's Bday).

4. For heaven's sake, did I mention you should comment? Your chances are really good - like 1 in 20 if my record holds . . . those are outstanding odds! And this package so wants to end up on your doorstep!

Here's a little photo hint of some of the goodness that awaits you {if you aren't chicken and COMMENT!}

On Wednesday of next week, I will tell you about one of the best gifts I ever got. You're not going to want to miss it. Hope your weekend is filled with Holiday Cheer!

ps. Ooh, did you catch that? I used the word minutiae!

And The T-Shirt Goes To . . .

Sparcam! Congratulations! It'll be on its way to you tomorrow! This was so much fun to do that I've decided I'm going to have a give away every month - so stay tuned and speak up if you feel like winning.

{And thanks to my cute sis-in-law Heather for being my random number generator.}

Gratitude Week . . .

It would be totally inappropriate to donate an entire post to my gratitude for the recently released {and oh, so enjoyable} movie New Moon. That would be weird, right? If I did, you might never come back to this silly little blog again.
I can't bear the thought of that, so instead I want to talk about my gratitude for YOU today! Yes, I'm talking to you, the readers of my blog. Whether you are a regular commenter, a silent observer {aka: lurker}, a sweet friend of my mom's who can't quite figure out how to get a google account, my brother who randomly comments when feeling snarky, a complete stranger all the way over in Spain, an anonymous reader whose comments reach into my soul, a fabulous mother-in-law, a former ward member, a mere acquaintance or a very close friend, you need to know that I am so very grateful for you.
In case you haven't noticed, I've been going though some difficult times as of late. I know there are degrees of difficulty and in my case, it's not so bad. But it's still difficult to me and you need to know that I have looked to my blog and its readers as a little life raft in my current stormy seas.
On this blog I've been able to talk about {at times in veiled reference}, think about, and work through some tough emotions. And through it all you have read, listened and even advised. It has been a great comfort and help to me. So thank you. To all of you, whether you're vocal or not. You are appreciated. {Insert pat on your back here.}
As a little show of my affection, I decided that a giveaway is in order today. And it just happens to do with a certain little movie I love and a certain friend I love even more.
My super talented friend-for-life Jennie was willing to take a design idea from my head and turn it into a T-shirt for me to wear to the New Moon premiere. Nothing says devotion like a custom made tee. Lucky for you, she printed me an extra and I'd like to send it to a Dragonfly reader.
The shirt is screened in metallic silver and bronze {for Edward and Jacob, of course} on a super soft American Apparel tee. Here's the front:

And here's the back {because I believe no girl should have to make that kind of choice . . . it's just too hard}:

If you'd like to win this shirt, which would make a choice Christmas gift for an obsessed Twihard, just leave a comment on this post telling me what you are grateful for this Thanksgiving. I'll close out the comments at midnight EST on Friday, November 27th. Please leave an email or link to your blog so I can contact the winner.

Isn't gratitude the best?

ps. I'll use a random number generator to pick the winner!

The Fam . . . (and some business)

Lessons learned from taking this picture:

1. Taking a picture of my kids will be cute. Really cute.
2. Taking a picture in the evening will result in bad lighting. Really bad lighting.
3. Taking a picture of myself at this angle after having a baby will be unflattering. Really unflattering.

Now to the business. I hope you all noticed the gorgeous new banner at the top of my blog. My friend Sue surprise gifted it to me and I was thrilled for the change, seeing as how I love to rearrange every so often and a fresh new look is always fun. Thanks so much, Sue! You are one talented gal.

There are two other changes to the blog that I wanted to mention - first, if you look on the sidebar to the right there is a new feature underneath my 'mug shot'. I've applied for a creative commons license which essentially copyrights and protects the content of my blog from being stolen.
You can click on the little grey box for details, but essentially it says that anyone can use content from my blog as long as they attribute it back to me (by linking or mentioning my blog), do not use any of my content or photos for commercial purposes, and do not alter my content in anyway or claim it as their own.
It may seem a little much, but a few of my favorite bloggers have recently had their content hacked - one gal came upon another blog that had been stealing EVERY SINGLE POST WITH PICTURES and claiming it as their own! I don't think there is anyone out there trying to steal my stuff, but as a writer, I just want to be sure my original work is protected.
The other new feature I've added is a watermark to my photographs. Though I know it kind of ruins a great picture, this measure prevents anyone from stealing my pictures to use as their own. (Yeah, I know they aren't THAT good, but still . . .) If you would like to use one of my pictures, please either copy one with a water mark or email me directly and I will give you permission to use the original photo as long as you attribute the picture to me.
Wow, this is one boring, informational post. Back to exciting tomorrow.

Dear Anonymous (or anyone else reading) . . .

I have been thinking a lot about the comment you left for me last week. It has become the catalyst for this post - a post I have been wanting to write for quite some time.

You said {in reference to the post "Faceplant"}:

"I can't tell you how much that post means to me. You seem to be that "all together person" I can aspire to be, but never come close to emulating. To see you have days like this (which is most of my life) I can smile, and know that fantastic woman have bad days, too. Maybe I'm not so "off".

Although I love blogging for many reasons {getting in touch with my inner-writer, meeting great people, a chance to record personal history} your comment reminded me of how easy it is to read someone's blog and fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to that person.

I have consciously chosen {as do many, if not most bloggers} to represent the very best of my life on my blog - the happy moments, the pretty crafts, the funny anecdotes, and yes, the occasional catastrophe involving small children. But I need you to know, Anonymous, that what I share on my blog is a mere 5 to maybe 10 percent of my actual life. My blog is a completely EDITED version of my life! {so friends of mine, if you are reading this and think you know what is going on in my life, think again!}

What I don't share, in all fairness to you Anonymous, is what makes me just another average house mom trying to survive what is an often difficult, occasionally heartbreaking and sometimes very mundane life. I don't share the sadness I feel about my child with medical issues, or the frustration I sometimes have with my family, or the fact that I raise my voice at my kids . . . A LOT or that I leave dirty dishes in the sink for days at a time because I just can't face doing them.

What I'm trying to say is, I hope you will not get sucked into the comparison trap, which I have personally found usually ends up with me feeling like a failure. Instead, I hope you will not let my blog - or any other blogs for that matter - make you feel like the writer is fantastic and you are "off". You are not "off" - you are human. And so am I.

Thanks again for your honest comment. It really made me think about what I write on my blog and how it might appear to others. I want my readers to come away feeling great about themselves and what they're doing in their lives by getting a peek into mine. I'm going to try to do better at that.

Love,
The Dragonfly

ps. For a great read on comparing ourselves to others, check out this post from Stephmodo.

Random Musings From A Dragonfly . . .

{a.k.a. Photo Dump from the last three weeks of my life}
Have you ever told your child to reach for the stars?

And then watched him do it right in front of your eyes?

Hey cutie! That is an awesome shirt you've got on there, and I'm totally digging the coordinated pacifier.

Hey cutie! It is absolutely hilarious when you do that with your eyes!{and I hope your momma doesn't kill me for posting this picture, but it is a total classic}

Doesn't my dad look handsome with a color coordinated baby on his arm?

Why, oh why did Target have stock this stroller AFTER I bought mine? Please forgive me Owlie!

I hope some day my Big C finds a girlfriend like this to marry. She's stylish, a great cook, super talented AND she has red hair!

Have you ever noticed how freaky an eye looks when it's not pictured with the rest of the face? Hmmm . . . something to think about.

Three Word Thursday

Double. Chinnned. Delight.
Again, thanks to Cathe Holden {if you haven't checked out her blog yet, you simply must}, who's great idea of Three Word Thursday has not only given me a chance to evaluate my little world each Thursday, but has also given a new mom a chance to rest and still feel like she's contributing {however meagerly} to the blog world.

It's Friday, I Feel Like Playing . . .

Tag, that is. Kasey, over at Beautiful Mess, tagged me to share with you the sixth picture in my picture files on my computer. It just happens to be a photo of these happy people - my in-laws. Believe it or not, they are actually even nicer and friendlier than this picture suggests. I heart them very, very much.

And it just so happens, that one week from today, I will be in California at their house for an inaugural event - the first ever Lee Family Sister's Reunion. Yep, me, one other sis-in-law and the five Lee girls chillaxing at home in sunny, warm CA with the mom and pops. Eating recklessly (and me for two!). Watching chick flix (Twilight again, anyone?). Getting our piggies painted (which is good, because I can't reach my own anymore.) All this combined with earth shatteringly deep conversation, rowdy laughter, and not a child in sight who needs their bum wiped, nose blown or homework finished.

Just what this prego-emotional momma needs.

Now I tag the following people to go look in your photos on your computer and post picture #6:

Sue @ Um Thanks for Sharing
Christy @ Kansas Sweet Kansas
Audrey @ Mom on the Go
The Kernal @ From Ranger to Leatherneck
Jennie @ Doezieland

Thanks Kasey!

Inquiring Minds Want To Know . . .

Picture by Norman Rockwell

I enjoyed a phone call with a college roommate yesterday (hi LJ!) as I reclined on my couch, famished from shoveling four inches of snow from my driveway. You know, with my delicate situation I tire so easily. . . ha.

At one point our conversation turned to Big C and the fact that he is becoming responsible enough to watch the other two for a very brief period of time while I run to the grocery store around the corner or to drop something off to a friend in the neighborhood. I commented on the cost effectiveness of this idea and we were suddenly discussing babysitters in general.

After that conversation, I feel the need to poll my readers to find out what the going rate is for babysitters in your respective areas. This is a hot topic of controversy for the Hubby and I. He tends towards a more frugal number than I typically would. I am trying to remain competitive because I know what other families in our area (read: ward) are paying. We pay about $2.50 a kid and will throw in an extra dollar an hour if the babysitter straightened up or did the dishes (both of which I did as a rule when I was a babysitter eons ago!)

I'd love to know - what do you pay your babysitters? Do they straighten up after the kids go to bed or do they sit around watching TV and texting their friends? Sound off in the comments section - I can't wait to share this with the Hubby.

No Winner Yet . . . Here's a Big Hint!

I have enjoyed reading all the creative guesses about the collage I posted yesterday as a little quiz. Dangling a card by the Queen actually did bring a few lurkers out to comment - hello to my cousin Vanessa!

At this point, there is no winner. Several of you (you know who you are) were disqualified (you know why). I'm okay with that, since I think you already have a card or two from the Queen.

I've decided to give you until 2:00 EST today to figure it out. And since I'm such a nice blogger, I'm going to give you a big ol' hint.

There are clues to the answer in all of these previous posts:

http://samanthaleelee.blogspot.com/2008/11/new-addition-to-our-family.html

http://samanthaleelee.blogspot.com/2009/01/my-new-baby.html

http://samanthaleelee.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-girl-in-town.html

Now, who wants that card? See you at 2:00!

Pause . . .

No blogging today. Taking care of a sick kid and trying to manage with the Hubby away on business. Sure could use the reprieve he brings at 6:30. Tomorrrow then . . .
