And Then We Made This …

caramelapple

Is there anything more delicious than a giant Granny Smith apple smothered in gooey caramel, dipped in chocolate and then rolled in toffee bits?

Uh, NO.

I am running out of Halloween steam after a church party, costume making/gathering, a preschool party, pumpkin carving, and fighting over candy.

And it’s not even Halloween yet.

The one thing I wanted to do for me (and to give to others) before Halloween this year was make caramel apples. Last night, amidst the chaos of English papers being written, Science tests being corrected, lunches being made, and one four year old (whom I will not name) melting down in fits of hysteria, I got out the ingredients and went to work.

Hannie B helped me unwrap the caramels. I know, I know, there are other, easier ways to do it. But I like the Kraft caramels in the clear wrappers and I’m fine with unwrapping them. I sneak a few straight into my mouth. Quality control, and all.

I followed two instructions specifically. First, I scrubbed the heck out of the apples under extremely hot water to get the waxy whatever the grocery stores put on off so the caramel would stick. Second, I put the apples in the fridge for a good hour to get them really cold for dipping.

The rest was just trial and error. We made two different versions of apples. Caramel white chocolate and caramel chocolate, waiting to dip in the melted chocolate until after the caramel apples had been in the fridge for a half hour to harden. Then we dipped them in crushed Oreo cookies or toffee bits.

This apple isn’t perfect. It has bubbles in the caramel. I don’t care. It tasted pretty darn perfect to me when I cut it up and shared it with The Hubby last night. His lips smacked and he declared it unbelievably good. Like $10 apple good. What does that mean? It means it’s super yummy! My Hubby is FRUGAL and would never pay $10 for a caramel apple!

We have three more apples to share as a family. They are HUGE. One a day till Halloween.

I’m thinking ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is a  real good thing!

That looks delish. I like that you slice and share because I'm pretty sure I couldn't eat the whole thing by myself off the stick.

What a compliment from the Hubby!
