But I Don’t Wanna …

sammustache

I can’t count the number of times I’ve asked my kids to do something, eat something, or help with something only to have them reply, “But I don’t want to. I don’t like (fill in the blank).”

I usually give them the smart alec parent retort, “In life sometimes we have do to things we don’t want to do or don’t like to do. Get used to it.” I wish I could say it puts a halt to the whining. It does not. But they usually complete the task since I’ve offered little to no sympathy.

Now I’m in their shoes.

I have committed to running a 5K with my sisters in November. I really don’t want to do it. I don’t like running.

Every other day when I need to get up and run in the morning, I have to tell myself, “In life sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do or don’t like to do. Get used to it.”

The thing about running is that I’m slow. And awkward. Also I have to pee a lot. Plus I breathe like a dork and I’m pretty sure my eye twitches. Then there’s the snot factor which my allergy prone body cannot contain.

I pretty much cannot relate to people who love running.

I have yet to sign up for the 5K. My sis Audrey asked me yesterday if she needed to to do it for me. I curled up in a ball in the corner and sucked my thumb.

I putting this out there today so that I have a level of accountability. I am going to do something I don’t like!

Even if I don’t wanna, I’m gonna.

{Picture from our family reunion this summer. I definitely don’t ever wanna grow a ‘stache!}

Sounds like fun, right.

Just plan a super-yummy brunch for after the 5K with said sisters! While you are running you will keep yourself motivated with egg casserole and fruit and muffins and faux-mosas and great laughs :)

You can do this, Sam!! And doing something like this with people you love makes it all the better. If Chris is a runner he got some of those genes from you whether you believe it or not. I think having good tunes to listen to makes a HUGE difference also. It can motivate you when you don't want to go any further. Download some good running tunes and run with an ipod, etc. Go, go, go!!

Just do it, a 5K isn't that far or that hard. I did one at your age, the only one I've ever walked/runned. I think it will be easier that dealing with Chris's insurance issue...that's one I wouldn't wanna have to do.

You can do it! If its the Gizzard run at Ida Lee, watch out for the hills!...more of a cross country trail for that one.

I agree with Erin...plan a reward for yourself...breakfast date, new shoes, grocery shopping ALONE....whatever your thing is.

I'm injured and haven't been able to run in 5 months. Hope to be back on the trail soon. Music helps me a lot...or running with my sister-in-law who talks the whole time (I do not/cannot respond for lack of oxygen!) :)

You can do it!

It's going to be Epic. Why? Because we're doing it together.

Good luck! You could always try the C25K program to get ready. I did it a few years ago for my first and only
5k. I wished I had done it with a friend it would have been so much better. Doing it with your sister will make all the difference!

I totally get where you are coming from! I do not like running, I can't understand the love of it and I've never experienced that "runner's high". I wouldn't do it, but it looks like you are going to so I wish you luck and I'm proud of you for doing it even though you don't want to. In your honor I'll do some sit ups today even though I'm kind of sick and I don't wanna!

You will love that you did it! I promise. Start with the app "couch to 5k" and work up to a pace that is right for you. I used to hate running too. Could not understand the love people had for it, but once I got over the fact that I wasn't going to be first and that I was doing this for me, my health and my family (your family needs a healthy momma), I conceded to a pace that makes me love running. I wish you lived closer. I would take you out to run/walk/blow your nose/pee, etc. I promise you will not regret it. Work on your breathing. Relax your shoulders. Swing your arms straight not side to side (think of a utensil drawer; all the silverware is going one way in their space...i know your relate since you love to organize!). I can't wait to hear all about it...xo

p.s. bonus: your family will see you set a goal and accomplished it even though you didn't want to do it!

P.S. Please buy some felt and other trimmings so that we can add turkey feathers or look like pilgrims while running. I'm counting on your creativity to deck us out on the big day.

I agree with the comments above. Plan somethings fun to do as a reward after the run with the group you are doing the run. This will help motivate you, probably.

I am in the same boat with you. I don't like running that much, it's not that I hate it when doing so, but I never have the will to say: "I'm going running." This is why I usually go running with a friend (then if you agree with that person to go running, it's much more difficult to back off at last minute) and I always take my ipod with me. And we usually tune to the same radio music station so we have the same songs playing.

I hope you are more motivated now about the 5K than when you wrote this post and that my little pieces of advice help just a little.
