No More Milk Mustache . . .

I'm a dairy girl. It's true. I love cheese and ice cream, yogurt and tall glass of ice cold milk. Don't even get me started on butter. I could write an entire post simply declaring my unabashed love of butter.

Dairy products play a pretty big role in our diet around here. Big C {known as "the selective one" in these parts} practically lives on the stuff. Without cheese, my boy would die. Hungry? Grab a string cheese! Breakfast? Nothing like a nice bowl of cold cereal with milk! Got a hankering for something sweet? Throw some blueberries in a yogurt and call it good! There is absolutely zero calcium deficiency going on here.

Imagine my surprise/dismay/frustration/sadness this week at little Ollie's two month check up when the pediatrician told me that it was time for me to give up my love of dairy for the next four to five months to prove my love for my little boy.

Ya see, Mr. Ollie's been having a little struggle in the bowel department, which in turn is giving him trouble in the sleeping department, which is causing a vicious no sleep/cranky baby/explosive poop situation, which frankly is making me an almost crazed momma.

In honor of my last day of dairy, I made homemade macaroni and cheese last night and ate three deliciously large helpings-full. I paid for it today with the wee one, but I have since sworn off all things milk based and am hoping for relief {and sleep} to come soon.

Oh how tasty the milk and cheese and yogurt looked to me in the fridge today! They were calling to me to sample of their creamy goodness. Why is it that the things we can't have always tempt us the most?

Alas, I ate a bowl of milkless oatmeal and a plum for breakfast, a piece of frostingless carrot cake for lunch {don't judge me} and treated myself to a cheeseless sandwich loaded with veggies from the deli for dinner while my kids ate the left over mac and cheese. It's going to be a long four to five months.

In the mean time, I'm looking for advice on milk replacements for my morning bowl of cereal. Anyone?

You don't have to give up cereal, just use rice, almond or soy milk. I like the rice milk - it has a mild taste and is dairy free. There are some good replacement ice creams as well. There are coconut milk based ice creams that are delicious. Wegmans will be your new friend. They have a great selection of non-dairy goodies.

Soooo sorry. I also have a love affair with dairy. Ryan doesn't get it because he's not a fan of milk, ice cream (gasp!), etc. If I had to give it up, I might go crazy. Hang in there. If I think of any great ideas, I'll pass them your way.

Rice milk x2, get the enriched kind in the blue box.
Did you remember that this is what all my kids had right? A milk protein allergy. I tried going off all dairy, but my milk supply dried up (I never had that much to begin with) which is why they were all on the super-expensive Nutramigen formula. They all got over it by 18 months, but my nephew Zach didn't and still can't have it. It's very important that you don't have any milk protein in your system to give him a chance at not developing a more permanent allergy.
Good luck, I know your pain - and call me sometime ehh?

Soy milk. Vanilla-flavored is delicious! :-)

Silk - Light Chocolate is my favorite!

Sorry that dairy makes little Ollie into a cranky pants. I love dairy too and I can imagine it would be really tough to be on a dairy strike.

Wow, that IS love. Hopefully, you see improvement with the wee one immediately. Otherwise, I know I'd have a hard time staying committed.

Awww. I hope you see a big improvement in baby O with this dairy sacrififce! There are a lot of milk replacments, but my favorite is vanilla soymilk. The brands really differ in taste, but good luck finding one that you like!

My babies had poopy issues also, but I was never told dairy was the culprit! I recommend Silk. It really taste pretty good if you can still have soy. Good Luck!

Owlie and I are bonding long distance: milk, ice cream and yogurt are all triggering allergic reactions right now. But butter and cheese still seem to be OK. Phew!

I've been dairy, wheat, yeast, and sugar free for quite some time. It's the milk protein casein that's the problem, rather than lactose. Therefore milk and soft cheeses like ricotta, mozzarella, yogurt, are difficult. Butter and hard, aged cheeses seem OK. Anything with whey in it is a disaster...Try Silk Soy Milk (in dairy section of grocery). If you want a boxed shelf version, WestSoy is best. Avoid the cheese substitutes like Soy Kaas--they are terrible. Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (almond milk) is awesome. I prefer sorbet to other dairy imitation ice creams. I've tried it all......hope it works for you!

I had a friend whose baby was extremely allergic to milk...thus she used oj on her cereal. Sounds weird but not bad, try it.

OH DEAR! That's love, man! My friend's lil gal is having the same issues although it's been bad enough they hospitalized her for five days last week to test for all sorts of things that could enflame her lil insides! You story sounds just way too familiar to hers. Just take it a day at a time, you're strong and you can do it!!! At least you've got a ton more options than our commissary has to offer. Or at the very least, your options don't need a German/English dictionary :)
