April Giveaway Winner . . .

Congratulations Laura!  You are the lucky winner of my cleaned out craft closet goodness!  I hope you'll email me and let me know what clever things you make with it. I also hope you'll email me your address so I can send you your package!

Here, as a reminder, is the give away bounty:

And this is what I did with it:

1. Made a Spring banner out of pre-cut chipboard {Christy was right, these flower shaped chipboards would be darling in a girl's room}.

2.  Made DIY card kits for the ladies at church to put together. You have two complete kits, but you can do whatever you'd like with them!

3.  Made garland for a party which I then turned into a baby mobile for Ollie. There are enough circles here for a small garland.  Just run it through a sewing machine with some coordinating thread.  Don't sew?  Punch holes in the circles and use as gift tags!

4. Made last minute birthday gifts for two friends. You can keep this note pad and the mini-composition book all to yourself for listmaking!

5.  Froufified some jars and flower arrangements. There is enough polka dot ribbon {and some pink camoflage too} to wrap gifts, make hairbows  or tie on just about anything you need prettied up.

6. Decorated a tree with well wishes for a new one. There are multiple tags to tie on gifts or slip in lunches with wishes for wee ones.

I've also included some fun paper clips, a chipboard album with photo corners, and a little surprise that isn't in the photo above.

Have fun crafting Laura!  Hope you enjoy.

Giveaway Winners . . .

This is the scene in my front yard. Lovely little blue flowers peeking out to say hello. Spring is definitely rounding the corner!

A big congratulations to Chocolate On My Cranium who better clear off her mantel to make room for the Spring Banner. Her description of the green wheat fields near her home painted a vivid picture in my mind.

And a second congratulations goes to Jami {my Hubby's older sis} who has custom mommy calling cards coming her way! Her description of herself in flip flops with sweats as sexy put a huge grin on my face.

I'll contact you both for mailing information and customization questions. And now I'm off to search for a very large piece of furniture...

ps.  All winners are chosen by Random.org's random number generator.

Something Special...

I'm blogging a little bit later than normal today because I had a little appointment with a friend this morning.  Oops, I'm sorry, I meant to say I had an appointment with a little friend this morning.

My four and half year-old buddy Ella came to see me, much to Ollie's delight.  We've been planning this for months.  A few weeks ago Ella's mom had a new baby and Ella was dethroned as Queen of the House.  I feel her pain.  I've been dealing with it for 31 years {but really, my baby brother is awesome}.

Ella has me wrapped around her little finger.  She calls me 'Sammy' in her tiny elf voice and I suddenly want to buy her a puppy and balloons and a cone with three scoops of ice cream.  I cannot stand it, it's that cute.

So, in an effort to make her feel extra special while lots of attention is being paid to her new baby sis, I invited her over for a playdate today.  On the agenda:

Crafts.
We made a butterfly picture clip and a crazy mask to hide her identity when her siblings come home from school today.
American Girl Dolls.
We dressed and undressed them all while Ollie screamed happily. He's crazy for the American Girl scene.

Manicures.
We painted her nails a perfect shade of bubblegum pink.  Then I told her we would do Ollie's for laugh, but she reminded me that he's a boy.

Angelina Ballerina.
We watched two short episodes.  Man, I love a mouse with a British accent.

A Tea Party.
We munched on little heart shaped PB&J sandwich flowers with carrot and cucumber stems.

We enjoyed finger trays of fruit snacks, goldfish and pretzels and drank lemonade.
And we called strawberries, blueberries and a Samoa the grand finale.

She enjoyed it all with this $1 lovely atop her head, making her feel like the Queen of the House once again and I sent her home with a little present for becoming something I have never been:  A Big Sister To A Little Sister.

Ollie and I both thought it was so fun to have a little princess in the house!

Don't forget to scroll down to yesterday's post and leave a comment for the March giveaway, which ends Monday at 5 pm EST.  The Spring banner is toying with my emotions.  It's really, really cute.  Cute enough that the Hubby asked, "Are you really going to give that away?"  I might have to make another one this weekend.

Have a Great Weekend

A Happy Little Spring Giveaway . . .

I feel like this long, cold, gray winter is finally drawing to a close, its white snowy blanket slipping off the end of the bed to reveal the lovely sheets that have been hiding underneath.

Do you feel it?  It’s in the increasingly sunny days that warm the usually cold car, or on the arms of the short sleeved shirt wearing kids in lighter weight jackets heading to the bus stop.

Do you see it?  It’s on the ends of tree limbs in the form of tiny buds and blossoms.  It’s pushing up through the earth and unfurling as tulip leaves.

Do you hear it?  It’s in the sound of running water as the last traces of snow melt and make a hasty exit out of the neighborhood.  It’s a part of the conversations between birds tossed through the air from tree to tree.

Do you smell it?  It’s something noticeable in the breeze drafting through an open window.  It covers the children as the come in from running and playing outside in the warmth.

Oh! I can almost taste it, this beautiful thing called Spring.  And I sincerely hope you are able to take a moment and enjoy it as much as I am.

I’d love to hear what it is in your little world that’s telling you Spring is near.  Leave a comment by Monday at 5pm EST and you will be entered to win the Spring banner  pictured above – a little handmade gift to you from me.

And since I’m feeling especially Springy today, a second winner will be drawn to win a set of 36 custom mommy calling cards like those shown in yesterday’s post. Your info, your choice of background photo.  And you don't need to be a mom to win!

Happy Spring, dear readers!  You are simply the best.

ps.  Don't forget to leave me a way to contact you in the comment!

Thinking About . . .

*this funny movie and how awesome Bill Murray was in it . . .
*the even funnier fact that for the first two years we were married the Hubby thought my birthday was on Groundhog Day . . .
*the truth that no matter who saw or didn't see a shadow today, we are definitely in for six more weeks of winter. . .
*the pan of warm cinnamon rolls sitting atop my kitchen counter.  Will they make it into my children's tummies after school today, or will the mom who made that promise break it? Only time and my guilty conscience will tell . . .
*the possibility that going to bed at 9:00 last night so I could get up at 6:00 to make cinnamon rolls actually meant I got more sleep . . .
* how much I love snow, but how disappointed I'll be if it cancels my book group tonight . . .
*how truly moved I've felt by all of the beautiful stories of love and affection that have been shared for the February give away . . .
*how I'd love to read more stories, so leave a comment before 5 pm EST today!  The winner will be announced tomorrow.

February Give Away . . .

There's just something about the month of February! It's one step closer to the long gray days of winter being over and the first blooms of spring poking their heads through the ground. It's the month we celebrate love - and Oh! how I love to celebrate love. When you throw in a ground hog, two presidents and a birthday for a certain YOUNG lady {me}, this month is full to the gills with fun, frivolity and festivities.

In order to due justice to all that is February, I think a great give away is in order.

I've spent the last week crafting something special for one lucky reader. Last year I happened upon a severely clearanced plain Valentine's candy box from the Martha Stewart line at Michael's. After covering it with vintage dictionary pages and a good coat of Modge Podge, I took it over to the Queen's house to receive the royal Valentine's treatment. A touch or two of glitter, a helping of vintage crepe paper, a cherubic cupid and some appropriate holiday sentiments now don its lid.

I don't know about you, but I think it turned out pretty darn amazing! In fact, I'm really having to hold myself back from just calling this beauty MINE and scrapping the whole give away thing!
But since you are loyal readers I think you deserve to have a vintage boy in a blue loin cloth as part of your holiday decor. Trust me, he'll charm your pants off {just in case you were wondering what happened to his}.
And I predict that if you are the winner, the sweet words festooning this candy box's front will hold true for you . . . you won't forget me.  Ever.  Because oh, man, there's more . . .
Inside this pretty box are some goodies for you.  As in chocolate, of the dark variety.  And {yes, AND!}a selection of gorgeous handmade cards from the Queen herself.  Trust me when I say that a card crafted by the Queen is a keepsake for life. I've got an entire box of them in my room that I thumb through when I feel the need to reaffirm my mama's love for me.  And by golly, does she love me!

She must love you too, because she generously donated two cards to this month's give away.  So feel free to pen some heartfelt thoughts to your Valentine on one and then keep the other all to your little ol' self!
So, sweet readers, the sweets are yours for the taking.  All you have to do is leave a comment today or tomorrow telling me about the loveliest gift you've either given or received for Valentine's Day.  Don't forget to include some way for me to contact you. The give away closes at 5 pm EST on Tuesday and I'll announce the winner on Wednesday.

Happy Monday!

Blog & Giveaway Love . . .

Mid to late day posting is becoming all too regular around here.  I'm off kilter due to lack of sleep.  And this morning I decided it mattered more to fill my family's fridge with food than blog, so Ollie and I made the trek to the grocery store in the 15 degree weather.  I'm now set for a weekend of babyfood making and high chair refinishing.  Sounds fun, no?

Here's a fun idea for your weekend.  Go check out this new blog called Little Camera. It's a photoblog completely composed of photos taken with an iPhone.  I think you'll be surprised at the quality and creativity the photographer is showcasing.  He's exploring different 'apps' that give effects to his images,  which are primarily taken in the architecturally inspiring city of Washington DC.

Oh yeah, I should probably mention that the photographer/blogger is my brother - the one who used to have a blog but quit due to the pressures of coming up with witty dialogue week after week.  This new blog is right up his alley.  He gets to share his photographic talent with us all while using as few words as possible.  And his iPhone pictures will ALL put my actual camera photos to shame Go check it out and leave a comment telling him that his beautiful, witty blogging sister sent you his way!

I hope you'll come back here on Monday to see what I've got in store for the February giveaway.  It's going to be a quick time frame since I want to send it in the mail by Wednesday of next week to reach the winner well before Valentine's Day.  It's pretty special.  In fact, I love it so much I may have a hard time parting with it.

Have a great weekend!

Thoughts On Gifting . . . (and a winner + a blog recommendation)

I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that I have a {un}healthy little obsession with giving gifts. I'm sure it has something to do with "The Pleaser" in me. That, and it just makes me feel so happy! I feel happy when I'm scouring the stores, my brain in gear thinking, my wallet itching to open {sorry Hubby} my heart totally into doing something for someone else. I feel happy when I'm packaging something up in a cute or clever way, imagining a reaction on the recieving end. And I feel really, really happy when a gift is opened and a genuine smile creeps across the face of the beneficiary who in that moment feels special, loved, and appreciated.

Lucky for me then that this is the year of the baby!  I have so many friends having babies I honestly can't count them all.  It's somewhere near twenty.  So when I'm out and about, I've got my baby gift eyes on.  Today three babies are getting gifts.  Two girls, one boy - maybe a future friend for Oliver?  Here they are, wrapped up, though simply, and ready to bring cheer to new mommies and warmth to new little ones.

Since I'm in the mood to give, here's a little gift for you, dear readers of this silly-little-blog-about-nothing: a link to another of my favorite blogs, Giver's Log.  AmberLee is a gift giving {and finding} genius.  I love to scour her posts for clever packaging ideas.  I love to scour her posts for original gift ideas.  I love to scour her posts for easy tutorials.  Heck, I think I'd scour her tub for an ounce of her creativity! Wait - I don't have to do that, because she's provided all out access to her creativity through this blog.  Two of my favorite posts are here and here. Go check it out!  But promise me that if you do, you'll then act on what you see by giving a gift to someone else {may I suggest donating to the RedCross to help our fellow humans in Haiti?}

And a last little gift to one lucky reader . . . Congratulations to EmilyatNotionsonNesting!
You are the winner of the January giveaway according to Random.org.  Your gift is on it's way and I know it's going to look fabulous in your fabulous home.  Come back in early February for a giveaway that is AWESOME.  It involves the Queen and will be key to your Valentine's happiness.

Accessorized . . .

I added this glass glitter garland to my boring Ikea kitchen chandelier for the holidays. Believe me, the chandalier was oh, so grateful. Now instead of being plain Jane, she's like a fine lady in a fancy necklace.

All the other holiday decor has been put away, but for some reason, I can't seem to bring myself to remove the sparkle from this one spot. I think I might just revolt and leave it up until the Hubby makes a comment. He may not even notice since we're busy doing that thing we do at the beginning of the New Year - you know, dejunk every room, nook and cranny in the house for a fresh start.

Do you do this in January too? Get all crazy with the organizing? My new litmus test for should it stay or should it go is to ask the following two questions: Do I use it? Do I love it? If the answer is no to both, then it's outta here. If the answer is yes to either, then I clean it up and put it in it's proper place.

And so, since the answer is Yes, I sure do love my glass glitter garland on the chandalier, it stays! Happy day! Now on to the next room...

ps. I was so encouraged by all the comments yesterday about family mattering most. Please, if you haven't commented yet, go do it now so you can be entered in the January giveaway!

January Giveaway . . .

At the beginning of each year we try to choose a phrase or motto that we will focus on as a family. This is our new family motto for the year, posted in bold letters on the refrigerator where we will see it every day. We've challenged our children {and ourselves, of course!} to really think this year about WHAT MATTERS MOST. The inspiration for this motto comes from a talk given by Russell M. Ballard in 2005. A specific passage of this talk struck me as I was contemplating what I hoped to accomplish with and for my family this year {I've highlighted especially meaninful parts in green}:

"Now, one may ask, How do we protect and preserve and strengthen our homes and families in a world pulling so hard in opposite directions? Let me make three simple suggestions:

1. Be consistent in holding daily family prayer and weekly family home evenings. Both of these invite the Lord’s Spirit, which provides the help and power we need as parents and family leaders. The Church curriculum and magazines have many good ideas for family home evening. Also consider holding a family testimony meeting where parents and children can express their beliefs and feelings to each other in a private and personal setting.

2. Teach the gospel and basic values in your home. Establish a love for reading the scriptures together. Too many of our parents are abdicating this responsibility to the Church. While seminary, auxiliaries, and priesthood quorums are important as a supplement to parental gospel instruction, the main responsibility rests in the home. You might want to choose one gospel subject or a family value and then watch for opportunities to teach it. Be wise and do not involve children or yourselves in so many activities out of the home that you are so busy that the Spirit of the Lord cannot be recognized or felt in giving you the promised guidance for yourself and your family.

3. Create meaningful family bonds that give your children an identity stronger than what they can find with their peer group or at school or anyplace else. This can be done through family traditions for birthdays, for holidays, for dinnertime, and for Sundays. It can also be done through family policies and rules with natural and well-understood consequences. Have a simple family economy where children have specific chores or household duties and receive praise or other rewards commensurate to how well they do. Teach them the importance of avoiding debt and of earning, saving, and wisely spending money. Help them learn responsibility for their own temporal and spiritual self-reliance.

My turning to this talk was a result of recognizing a flaw in my own person - the ability I have to cast aside the truly important for meaningless and trivial things that fritter away my time.  I'm here today accounting for it and tell you that it is going to stop. I want to be a more attentive and involved mother and wife.  I want to spend more time building relationships - and especially those within the walls of my home - because they are what matters most and will last the longest.

If I asked myself what matters most, would I speak to my children in an angry way?  Would I tend to a child in need of some attention instead of checking facebook?  Would I put my book away in order to read a book a child wants to hear?  Would I say the hurtful words I sometimes say to my Hubby?  Would I put my interests and desires aside, even just for a moment, to help someone in need?

These are the things I'm wrestling with.  These are the things I want to change.  And we've committed to doing it as a family this year.

I'd love to hear what matters most to you, my blog readers.  And, if you're willing to leave a comment, you'll be entered to win my January giveaway, which is this beautifully distressed sign that says "Peace" and another like it but in mineral green that says "Hope".  I think these two words embody something we're all looking for in the new year.

So tell me, What Matters Most to you? {Giveaway closes Thursday at 5 pm EST.)

Giveaway Winner {and a favorite gift story} . . .

I was overwhelmed by the beautiful responses you all shared about some of your favorite gifts. Your comments have given me great ideas for future gifting. Thank you for speaking up! Thanks to the website random.org for randomly generating the winner of the December giveaway.

Congratulations to Sunny who wrote:
"So my gift was actually a heartfelt note from my Dad that was left on my bed during a particular stressful and overwhelming time during college. (I'm not sure it counts?) He just gave words of encouragement and that he loved me and knew I could make it through. It was so thoughtful because at that time I knew my Dad was also going through stressful times with his business which in comparison with my little college stresses were nothing. Anyways, I still have the note and pull it out every time I start to get stressed out and it always makes me shed a tear and calms me down...which to me is the best gift ever."

I know your dad, Sunny, so I can imagine just how special this gift is to you. Your gift from me is in the mail. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite things! There will be another give away in January, so stay tuned.

Now, if you'll indulge me, I'd like to share with you the story of one of my all-time favorite gifts. Please forgive me, it's a little long, but as you'll see, it is absolutely worth EVERY WORD.

The First Birth:

Forty-one years ago this May, a beautiful twenty-one year old woman gave birth to a healthy, pink baby girl in a hospital in Durham, North Carolina. The delivery was a tough one – but not due to medical complications.

This delivery would mark the single most difficult moment in the young woman’s life. She would deliver her baby girl alone, while the father of her child was thousands of miles away fighting a war in Vietnam. She would deliver her baby girl alone, while her family in Utah was completely unaware of the pregnancy. And because she lived in a different time, when single motherhood was a public shame, after only a few days, she would deliver her baby girl alone into the arms of a social worker with a plea to “make sure the adoptive family knows I love her and have given them the greatest gift a human can ever give to another”.

The young woman who made that difficult choice so many years ago is my mother. Eventually she married the soldier after his return from Vietnam. And he is my father. But the baby girl born in Durham, North Carolina is not me.

A Second Birth:

Growing up as an only daughter sandwiched between two brothers suited me fine. Instead of boohooing about not having a sister, I chose to develop and maintain lasting friendships with women from all walks of life and embrace my seven sisters-in-law. In each of them, I have found sister spirits who have walked with me along my journey.

Then one night a year and a half ago, my parents gathered me, my two brothers and our spouses together at their home for “a meeting.” They began by expressing great love and appreciation for us. Their words were carefully chosen and their gratitude was evident by the tears that rolled down their cheeks. Next, they handed each of us a large manila folder, asked us to read its contents, and promptly left the house. Confused and intrigued, we began reading.

What happened next is one of those life moments that is hard to recapture in writing or even in words. In the folder were a series of remarkable letters detailing the birth, adoption, search and eventual reunion of a daughter with her birth parents – MY parents. From us, her existence had been kept a secret for forty years. The reality of this secret, of her life, became etched on our hearts as we watched a DVD filled with pictures of another daughter – one who bore a remarkable resemblance to me.

Five days later, this daughter walked through the door of OUR parents home and I knew instantly that the words on the pages, the face in the pictures and this person standing in front of me were all beautifully encapsulated in one word: SISTER. On that day, to me, (though she was almost forty years old) she had just been born.

The Last Birth:

That God would choose to give me a life with my sister after thirty-five years was a miracle I sometimes struggled to understand. Weaving her threads into the already complicated tapestry of my life took effort and was not always without pain. At the same time this all occurred, my husband and I were also dealing with a very personal struggle – three years of unexplainable infertility and miscarriages.

After exploring many options, we had finally come to the conclusion that our family must be complete despite lingering feelings to the contrary. We moved on, enjoying the three children we already had, while insulating our hearts from the sorrow, disappointment and sense of failure our decision had left with us.

Then one sunny Fall day the unimaginable happened: a pregnancy test gifted us with a pink line and even more unimaginable, the pregnancy decided to stick!

My sister rejoiced with me in the happy news. She sent me darling maternity clothes and called frequently to see how I was feeling. She even flew out to be at my baby shower. I felt prompted to ask her if she would like to be present at the baby’s birth and she readily agreed. A little less than a week before I was due to deliver, however, her grandmother passed away and we realized that our plans were not to be.

The night before my scheduled induction I went to my parents’ house for a “Last Supper”. Minutes after my arrival, my sister walked through the door surprising me. I was suddenly reminded that after missing a lifetime of ‘life events’, she would do whatever it took to be present for such an occasion.

My son was born in the early afternoon the next day. My mother, sister and two sisters-in-law were there as cheerleaders of my effort. As my husband held my hand, I sobbed tears of true joy when sweet Oliver’s tiny body was placed in my arms for the first time – thinking of how long we had waited to call him ours.

But my tears were also for my mother – she had just lifted my shoulders with each round of pushing – who forty years earlier had been in a similar room doing the exact same thing in order to give birth to my sister whom she would have to give away. And my tears were for my sister, whom I’d never known, but with whom I was now able to share this moment: the birth of my last child.

For one brief moment, as I looked from my mom to my sister, I could see that it had all come full circle – birth, pain, joy, sorrow, loss, grief, heartache, rebirth, joy, birth, exultation – the emotions we three shared in our roles as mothers, daughters and sisters, and I felt myself tied to these other two women, my mother and my sister, forever.

These three births – now one story – are some of the greatest gifts I know I’ll ever be given.

I love you Queen and Apis Meliflora!

Ooh Baby!

For the past two years I have blogged about these cookies. This weekend I made thirteen dozen of them. They are now gone. Today I will make thirteen dozen more and they will not last 'til the end of the week. In our house these babies are the quintessential Christmas cookie - filling the air with the spicy aroma of my childhood and making all mouths water. If you click on the link above, you too can have the recipe for this deliciously soft Ginger Snap.

Do you have a favorite Christmas cookie or treat? If so, would you be willing to share the recipe in the comments section? My waistline and I would be ever so grateful.

I'm off to wrap presents {of the birthday kind!} because today is Big C's twelfth birthday. Being 12 is a HUGE deal around here. I'll talk more about that on Thursday. Don't forget, you have until 5:00 EST today to enter the December giveaway! It's been a real treat to read about all the special gifts you've received over the years. I can't wait to send this package to one of you . . . maybe I should include some cookies.

December Give Away . . .

Word on the street is that Oprah didn't do her "Favorite Things" episode this year. You know the one where she raves about all sorts of luxurious gifts and then gives every member of the lucky audience one of EVERYTHING right there on the spot! Something about handing out cashmere not being appropriate for these tough economic times?
When I heard this, I thought of you, my beloved audience, who sit at your computers day after day reading this silly little blog about nothing, listening to me drone on and on about the minutiae of my life, and felt it would be appropriate to do a "Dragonfly's Favorite Things" give away that is more in keeping with the economic climate. Of course, if I had my way, I would send this little package to each and every one of you. But I fear the Hubby would not approve.

So, here's the deal-e-o:

I've compiled a fun box of some of my favorite things from one of my favorite places - The Target! None of these things were expensive {take that Oprah!}, and yet each one is like a little ray of sunshine to me on a cloudy day. I want to share a bit of my joy with a Dragonfly reader just in time for Christmas. Hey, if you win you could even hand it over to your sweetheart and tell him to dump it directly into your stocking on Christmas Eve since each of these items is small in scale, yet large on impact.

To be eligible to win, you need only do the following:

1. Leave a comment on this post telling me about the best gift you ever got, who gave it to you and why it meant so much.

2. Leave a way for me to contact you in your comment (email, link to your blog, etc.).

3. Comment before 5:00 EST on Tuesday, December 15th (Big C's Bday).

4. For heaven's sake, did I mention you should comment? Your chances are really good - like 1 in 20 if my record holds . . . those are outstanding odds! And this package so wants to end up on your doorstep!

Here's a little photo hint of some of the goodness that awaits you {if you aren't chicken and COMMENT!}

On Wednesday of next week, I will tell you about one of the best gifts I ever got. You're not going to want to miss it. Hope your weekend is filled with Holiday Cheer!

ps. Ooh, did you catch that? I used the word minutiae!

Thanksgiving Part II . . .

Since it's still November for one more day and I don't have any Christmas decor up yet, I figure I've can still blog about Thanksgiving until I'm accused of being a grinch who's in denial about December actually being here.

Here's our the adult table festooned in berried garland, plate side harvest candles and very last minute place cards scrawled out by yours truly. And my Thanksgiving table is only complete when the brown transferware dishes are brimming with all the holiday fixings.

This year I pretty much left the fixing of the fixings up to a highly skilled and really capable kitchen staff. I'm pretty sure I have completely used up my "I just had a new baby" excuse after this.

Meet talented and capable. No kidding, these to gals here made EVERYTHING {except the green beans and store bought rolls - yeah, I'm lame}. Thanks ladies. I love ya - and not just for your mad kitchen skilz.

This guy here is my dad, The Kernal, and he had two jobs: first, to bring and serve our beverage of choice {it's not champagne . . . it's Martinellis - remember, I'm a Mormon!} and second, to charm us all with his witty personality and fantastic stories. He did a great job at both.

Minutes before the meal, the candles are lit and the stomachs are growling. How was your Thanksgiving?

Ooh, just thought I'd tease you all a little bit and let you know that I've come up with {what I think is} a great idea for my December give away! And it has to do with this gal right here:

Trust me, you're gonna want to win this one. Happy Monday!
