My Love/Hate Relationship With Spring …

We have two dogwood trees in our yard that due to location do not flower at the same time.  This results in me staring out first my kitchen and then my dining room windows for weeks during Spring because I’m slightly obsessed with the blooms on the trees.

This year I’ve cut a few flowering branches, hammered the ends to allow the them to drink in the most water and placed them in bottles or vases around the house.  They’ve lasted longer than any flowers from a shop and are a gorgeous reminder of all that is going on outside . . . without me.

See, I have a love/hate relationship with Spring.  I am head over heels for the green, lush beauty and the flowering branches, vines and stems.  But I am riddled with allergies which the very beauty I love to look at produces in the form of pollen.

We’ve had very little rain this year which means the pollen count is at an all time high.  I certainly feel it each morning as I wake in a daze and can’t quite shake the grogginess for hours. When I finally do shake it I begin the sneezy, itchy eyed marathon that lasts until I lay my head down again at night.

I’m not myself during the Spring.  It seems cruel that when everything is waking and new, I feel sleepy and old.

How about you? Is Spring your friend or foe?

Spring is my frenemy too.

But I think you have it worse where you live. I'm not itching and sneezing all day.

Do you use a perscription nasal spray?

Some misery for me during spring but not like you.

I was just talking about that the other day with a friend. I am so grateful that I don't have allergies (knocking on wood, I don't want my immune system to ever change!) and I really love spring.
And we were saying that it must be hard to have allergies and not be able to enjoy spring at its fullest!

Maybe pollen allergy is one of the most cruel allergy possible... It shouldn't exist a allergy to that!

I hope you find a good prescription that helps you with the symptoms.

I am allergic to spring, which is why I love fall so much. I do love spring too. Just not in the same way. I take claritin but when it does not cut the symptoms, I flush my eyes and nose with water to wash the pollen out. That helps.

I love spring, but it doesn't love me, lol. Like you I have an amazing immune system that works so well that it thinks that pollens, dust, and animal fur and dander are bad for me. For me it's allergy shots and Rx nasal prescriptions. I rarely use OTC antihistamines because they have the unpleasant side effect of weight gain. I check pollen.com daily to see what the pollen levels are. I limit my outdoor exposure when it's high. If I can't I make sure that I take a shower before bedtime to rinse all the pollen off of me (of course, it helps to have clean, pollen free sheets, too.).

The plus side to allergies is that a Danish study found that if you have skin reactions, hives, etc, that your body fights off skin cancer than someone who doesn't get a skin reaction.

I'm like you. The itchy, runny eyes and the forever running nose. I've recently been told that if you eat honey made locally it will help cut your allergies because it's made from local pollen. Don't know if it's true, but maybe worth a shot. My neighbor just enlightened me with that information, and he's a beekeeper. He even gave me a jar of his local honey to see if it really works. Good luck! Stay in and read a good book.
