While on our vacation, the Hubby and I made it our goal to collect sea shells from the ocean floor to bring home to our children who’ve really only ever been able to purchase a shell from a souvenir shop. I lined them all up after cleaning them this weekend and thought the collection looked lovely sitting in the sun on the kitchen counter.
The thrill of the hunt was exhilarating. I honestly could have spent all day rocking in the waves, face down, mask and snorkel on, looking for something unusual to take home to the kids.
We found many small pieces of broken coral. The kids call them brains. We also found teeny tiny shells, which I had to bring home to feed the “tiny things obsession” we have going on here.
My favorites {aside from the heart shaped coral piece I kept for myself} are these two pink lovelies. They were broken, but still beautiful and so smooth. They went straight to Hannie B’s room.
We also gathered enough of these finger-like coral pieces to put in a small bowl for display. All of the coral that we brought home was already broken off and lying on the shoreline.
I find that I’m a bit crazy about collecting things. I have so many things I love. How about you? Do you collect things from vacations?
Ps. I will cease talking about my vacation now. It’s on to Christmas, which is hard to believe since it was almost 70 degrees here this weekend!

I collect bells, cake stands, old corporate & notary seals, letter openers and small chunky gold picture frames.
But mostly I collect dust. I have a really awesome collection of that.
Ha, ha....collecting, it's in your blood baby. I refuse to comment about my collections as it would be toooooo embarrassing.
I love that your kids call coral brains. I never thought of it that way but I can see that they are totally right!! I collect blue depression glass. And lately I have a problem with card stock. I can't stop buying it when it's on sale at Hobby Lobby.
Up until recently, I was very anti-collections. Collection just seemed like another word for clutter. But then I noticed how much I loved and enjoyed my mom's collections {vintage measuring cups, movie tickets, and sea glass} and decided that maybe I should take up collecting....
love the shells. What a nice dose of summer!
I collect sea shells and rooster themed kitchen items. I also collect Christmas ornaments from vacation spots. I collect trinkets and photos from my ancestors.
although I would have to agree with Melancholy Smile on the clutter issue. I hate clutter therefore my collections are quite small.
I cannot collect things without having nightmares of hoarding, but my kids are huge collecters. My favorite "collection" was when the twins were 6 and starting to read, Lexi, 3, wanted to read also. She started a word collection. Clothing tags, small notes, business cards, coupons, anything smaller than a note card with words on it went into her nightstand drawer. It drove me crazy to have a million little papers in her room at the time, but now I miss it. Those little quirky things are what makes Lexi so dang cute. One of a kind.
I don't know what to say about collections. I have some periods that I want to collect something and then other periods that I think it's stupid to do so...
I guess the thing here is that if you collect something, you should have to find a way to enjoy that collection (using it as decoration or something else) but not just keeping it in a box. I don't think there a point on that!
@The Quee Vee, I don't think it would be embarassing. I'm sure that whatever you may collect (as odd as it could be) you would find a way to turn it into such a great collection! I'm sure!!!
