When Little Boys Get Big . . .

Yesterday this fine fellow turned eight.  His freckled face and red head were surrounded by family and close friends for cheesecake and presents.

On his birthday wish list this year: Legos, bike gear, circus peanuts and “peace at home”.  He got the Legos and bike gear.  Peace at home, I’ve decided, is an unrealistic goal. Circus peanuts were totally going in the cart until I squeezed one in the bag and it cracked.  Not fresh – at all.  Maybe next year. Does anyone actually like circus peanuts?

I need to say something about this boy.  He is tender hearted and it makes me want to weep tears of joy.  Last night as we were cleaning up his room for bed I asked him if he’d felt special on his birthday.  His answer, “No. I feel warm, mom.”  I suggested he should turn on his fan if he was hot.  “No momma, I feel warm inside because the Holy Ghost is telling me that I AM special.” Cue the tears of the mother.

If I could wish one thing for all my children, it would be this: that they, like RedDog, would have the witness of God’s Spirit that they are so very loved and they are special to us and in God’s eyes.

It was a great birthday.

Little boys get big really fast. I love our tender hearted Red Dog, slow boy, slow down.

Red Dog has a faith-filled heart. Love that.

Wow! What a beautiful birthday gift for you, as his mother, for him to know and recognize that. Job well done, Mom.

Cheesecake, smart boy that Reddog! I CANNOT believe he's eight years old, that means you've been gone from Utah for that long-yikes! Thought you'd come back by now. Sniff.
