Apology to a Flower . . .

IMG_9119

The Hubby just reminded me this weekend that when we were newlyweds I emphatically declared “Don’t EVER buy me carnations! They are a waste of a flower!” Seriously? What a loser comment to make!

Back then a carnation was a white flower that had been put in artificial coloring to turn it an unnatural shade of turquoise blue or leprechaun green.  It was the cheesy red flower I got on Valentine’s Day in Jr. High from a prepubescent boy who declared his love to me with a single, crushed flower atop a long bumpy stem.

Now, however, I see carnations differently. In just the right shade of blush pink, carnations are the ruffled blouse of an afternoon tea or the frilly dress perfect for a late summer date.  When grouped together, a mass of flowers in view, layered like sheet after sheet of tissue paper, the effect can charm the pants right off the very girl who made that snobby comment so many years ago.

So, I’m sorry carnations, for calling you a waste of a flower.  Please forgive me for judging you unfairly. You are inexpensive, lovely in every way and dainty-as-can-be.  And today you will be the means by which I build another woman up.

Another of my friends from BYU made a similar comment around the same time, and I think her reasoning was that carnations were a cop out. You know, roses are romantic, carnations can be interpreted a variety of ways. So guys who were giving carnations were hedging their bets.
I've always liked carnations, though. And I think the friend who made that comment still is single ...

Carnations remind me of high school football corsages, but when grouped together in large quantities, and light pink in color, they redeem themselves.

Flowers for a friend sounds fantastic.

Someone is going to feel extra special today getting your carnation bouquet.

I like carnations but I must confess they smell like a funeral to me....sorry, that's kind of a downer comment.

I was still anti carnation until I read your post. I like the carnations you photographed so beautifully.

I'm having surgery next week and postdating some posts while I'm down and this is the EXACT post that will publish in two weeks. (okay not exact yours is much better written, but the same sentiment)

Too funny.

Clavells (the name for carnations (word I just learned on your post) in Catalan) remind me of my childhood. The garden from a house I used to go was full of them. Sweet memories!
And sure you made someone feel really special with you gift yesterday.

What kind of carnations are these? I was showing my Samantha and we think they are the best we have ever seen. Maybe it's the "back east" variety.
