Just Like In Olden Times . . .

IMG_6341

While I was thinking up old fashioned games for the last day of school party hopscotch came to mind.  It wouldn’t really work in our back yard since there’s nowhere to draw the “board”.  I considered using this idea I saw on Giver’s Log (super awesome blog for great gifts), but figured we had enough games to keep the kids happy.

I still wanted to have instant hopscotch for my kids to use on a rainy day so I pulled out some sturdy scrap fabric from my meager stash and painted on a hopscotch board using fabric paint.

I got it out for the first time for the kids to play the other night and it was like a little miracle had settled on the house.  They played harmoniously for an hour straight. Mind you, the tweenager was at a pizza party, but still, an hour of peace is like a treasure.

It was hilarious at first.  My kids had absolutely no clue how the game of hopscotch was played.  I was immediately transported back to the playground of my youth as I demonstrated the general concept.  As the kids played I was asked to clarify certain rules and judge infractions of rules.

Then the Hubby chimed in about how he was the king of hopscotch in his younger years.  And that got us started on all sorts of fun games from “Olden Times” that didn’t involve computer chips or Wiimotes or batteries.

We came up with a list of games we’re going to teach the kids this summer, including, but not limited to: four square, marbles, tetherball, Chinese jump rope and handball.

What do you think?  Got any games from your past that we need to add?

My boys got Twister hopscotch for Christmas and I remember trying to teach them to play and I was nine months pregnant!! It was quite the site. I guess that's one way to make yourself go into labor. ;) (it didn't work though)

Croquet? I'm sure you've thought of that already though. Great idea to teach all the old-fashioned games. I'm thinking you need to have old-fashioned desserts to go with all that fun: some banana splits and root beer floats, maybe?

Great minds, Apis. I was also going to suggest Croquet, which is what we played for FHE last night. Little Miss C became enraged at always coming in last and we joked that she should be the Queen of Hearts, screaming "Off with their heads!"

Love that your hopscotch board is on fabric. I'll have to steal that idea. :)

Those were the games I played growing up, are you saying that I lived in the olden times? I wonder what games you played growing up that your children will teach there children? Oh, and they will say these were the games they played in olden times.

Cute hopscotch board. Does the fabric slide when they land?
Nice list of games- you'll be having fun! Did you mention Monkey in the Middle? Or maybe that's not old fashioned.

How about kick ball or Red Rover. Went we were kids my brother, sister and I put up a sheet with a light behind it and made up plays and hand animals for our parents who sat on the other side watching.

My mom spent lots of hours sitting on the floor playing jacks and pick-up-sticks with me. She was trying to "lady like" me since I had three brothers and I wanted to do all of the things boys were doing.

Wagon rides were up there on the list when my own kids were little.
