Five Years In the Making . . .

I thought it was probably time to share the tale of my kitchen with my devoted readers - are you nine ladies still out there? I've visited several blogs lately where there are truly amazing kitchen transformations (specifically here and here) and while mine isn't quite as drastic - or fantastic - it has been an ongoing project for the past five years we've lived in this house and is kinda dear to my heart.

You see, the Hubby (bless his dear soul) bought this house without me ever seeing it. I know. I know. He will NEVER do that again. I was eight months pregnant, living as a single parent with the other two kiddoes in another state while he worked here and slept on a guest bed in my parents house. We had already been separated for three months.

So the sweet Hubby spent 10 minutes in this house, and pressured by offers from two other families, decided that it was THE ONE and that we needed to make a better offer. His reassurance to me was "besides a little painting, this house is move in ready". That statement came directly from the mouth of a man who'd spent most of his ten minutes admiring the wonderful back yard with its intricate deck, gazebo and stately age-old trees. That statement did not come from a man who'd looked carefully through the actual house. Combine those details with the fact that we were moving from a house we'd had built from the ground up- to our every specification, need and whim - and you can understand my reaction when I saw this house for the first time, got in the car and burst out crying.

Every room had wall paper or sponge painting or hideous murals. In the kitchen and dining area there was no hard wood flooring, only linoleum and carpet that a dog had loved too much. The kitchen was a mishmash of mixed counter tops and tiny cupboards in "builders basic" oaky stain and had a very 80's grapevine wallpaper border. It was not a pretty kitchen. At all. (see for yourself in this picture on demolition day one - look at how little Big C was then!)

On the day we took possession of the house (exactly two weeks after the birth of RedDog), we said goodbye to the previous owners and immediately began tearing up flooring and removing wallpaper with the help of the Queen Vee who is a mighty demolition queen. In the months and years that have followed, we have put in hardwood floors, removed all wallpaper and repainted, painted the bottom cupboards and put in all new upper cupboards from Ikea after first removing the soffits, covered the island in beadboard, replaced the lame stove, added shelves above the sink windows, removed the useless desk and put in a bay of storage drawers, tiled the back splash, replaced the counter tops, replaced the ugly chandelier and put in a new sink.

Here is a picture of the kitchen today, with Big C who has grown so much in 5 years! And I've included a little slide show highlighting some of my favorite things about my kitchen, which is finally what I've always wanted: LIGHT AND AIRY! Insert the Hubby saying is that even a real term?

He deserves 80% of the credit for the work done in this kitchen and I love him dearly for letting me cry about it as it was, and then letting me make it as I envisioned it could be.

I must defend Travis and his house buying choice. He looked at many, many houses, Virginia was at the beginning of the house buying frenzy and one had to act quickly. I think that Travis bought the right house. You know you were meant to live in that neighborhood.

You two have made it a beautiful home, yes with lots of hard work, some money and a lot of creativity. It's a refuge and happy place to be. There's no perfect place, or at least not one you/we can afford, but there are almost perfect homes. You have one.

I can't really complain about Travis picking a house without you. I did the exact same thing to Joel while he was in Iraq. Luckily for me he liked the house and there was no crying.

I love your kitchen. It's a vast improvement over the one you started with. I can't stand soffits!! They only place they belong is outside your house to cool the attic!!

WOW!! I LOVE your kitchen. LOVE it. You have done an amazing job. I lack vision (well, and money of course) so I don't really remodel. But I am considering painting my ugly kitchen cabinets black.

Need to clarify for all of you and especially the Queen - we absolutely love our house now and I know it was inspiration on the Hubby's part to pick it!

Also, wanted to let Julie know that we did every single step of this on a budget - aside from the hardwood floors - I think all of our improvements cost us under $3500.

Many people think money is an issue in fixing up a room, but there are so many ways to do it and be thrifty - for us that is half the fun!

I love your kitchen! It is so pretty. I wish I was able to "see" a final product like that! I could be a famous HGTV personality!!!

When can you and Travis come do a kitchen make-over down here?

I love how your kitchen turned out. It's fabulous!

I think this looks AWESOME! You did an amazing job, and all of your details just make it perfect! I would die for a kitchen like this, mine is shoved in a corner of my house. I think the builder got finished with the house and thought, "Oh Shoot, we forgot a kitchen...oh well, just put it in that corner over there!"
hehe, and your island is TDF!! :)

HURRAY! I love the before and after since my kitchen looks like the before and I've been telling Ryan he needs to see all the work you've done to get the light and airy look I love! Ahhh, one day! But now he can see what I mean w/ out us having to impose on you w/ a home tour :) Thanks and WELL DONE!

You did a fabulous job transforming your kitchen! It does look light and airy. It's a cozy place to feed your family, and make memories.
I love the way you've found ways to show off your collections above your sink area. It's those little touches that make a house feel like a home.

I think the shelf under the ceiling is my favorite part . . . but it all looks really great. I am looking for some ways to spruce up our mediocre kitchen.

you know i'm a huge fan of your kitchen...and your house in general. its funny how much i love your house and yet how much color I infuse in my house in comparison. I think that's why i love your home - the contrast.
Loving the subway tiles!
